Donut Fall in Love by Jackie Lau

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Actor Ryan Kwok is back in Toronto. After the sudden death of his mother and years of constant work, Ryan is taking some much-needed time off. But as he tries to be supportive to his family, he struggles with his loss and doesn't know how to talk to his dad. Baker Lindsay McLeod meets Ryan when he knocks over donuts at her bakery. When Ryan signs up for a celebrity baking show, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake. As they spend time together, bonding over grief and bubble tea, it starts to feel like they’re cooking up something sweeter than cupcakes in the kitchen.

I picked this book for obvious reasons, the title and cover. But it took me longer than normal to read as I couldn’t totally get into it. I enjoyed the parts when Lindsay was teaching Ryan how to bake, my mouth was always salivating and their banter was super cute.

There were a lot of characters in this book! Lindsay was very relatable in that she acted like she had her life together but was really a mess. I enjoyed her parts of the book more than Ryan’s. I loved that Ryan was such a flawed and normal human, despite being a star actor who won a Golden Globe and had a trending hashtag on Twitter about his abs.

Noreen, Lindsay’s best friend and bakery partner was always there for her over a beer at the brewery next door. I loved that Vivian and Lindsay finally became friends after barely ever talking even though they were roommates! Alice, Lindsay’s mom, was so funny with all her boyfriends yet so sweet for helping Ryan's sister. Melvin, was not the greatest in my opinion, but he added a lot to the story. And Ryan’s dad, he was honestly a frustrating character, but in a good way. I kind of predicted his character toward the end, but the way he was written was still really good and well-done.

Overall it wasn’t my favorite read but I enjoyed it!
